Support the industry on Global Fertilizer Day

October 13 is Global Fertilizer Day

Friday, October 13, is Global Fertilizer Day, established by the fertilizer industry as a way to help highlight the essential role fertilizers play in global food production. “About half of the world’s food production is attributable to the use of fertilizer, yet our industry commonly faces incorrect public perceptions about its importance,” says Michael Johnson, CHS Agronomy director of marketing.

“To shine a positive light on our industry, The Fertilizer Institute (TFI), Fertilizers Europe, Fertilizer Canada, International Fertilizer Association and the International Plant Nutrition Institute came together to develop Global Fertilizer Day,” he adds. The October date was chosen to leverage the ongoing discussions happening around World Food Day, celebrated this year on October 16.

Because the company has a stake in the continued success of the fertilizer industry, CHS has long been an active member of TFI. Currently, CHS Agronomy Vice President Rick Dusek serves on the TFI board of directors, and Johnson is a member of the TFI 4R Nutrient Stewardship and Sustainability and 4R Fund Management committees.

“Actively supporting our industry requires actively promoting it, and I encourage you to join these efforts and share our successes,” he says. “Help better inform the public about your work to improve stewardship, sustainability, safety and security.”

Social media is an easy and fun way to promote our industry. To encourage its use, TFI is hosting a photo contest this year. Take a photo you think embodies the spirit of the fertilizer industry, such as feeding the world, conserving the land or supporting communities. Then upload it to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #TFIFertilizerDay. One lucky winner will receive a Yeti Roadie 20 cooler.
